Principal Scientist and Research & Development Coordinator

The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) is the lead research organization, conducting and fostering applied and development oriented research in the agriculture and rural development sectors in Papua New Guinea.  Besides, NARI is responsible for providing analytical, diagnostic and advisory services to the agriculture sector.  Such services include chemical analysis, advisory services and biometric and statistical services. 

Applicants are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the following positions, which are available for immediate recruitment.

  1. Principal Scientist (Biotechnology& Crop Improvement) - Grade 15-16 based at Momase Regional Centre-Bubia, Lae. Open to Non-Citizen and Citizens.

The appointee should be an experienced expert in crop improvement, molecular science and biotechnology, ideally with good academic and research enhanced capacityparticularly inbiotechnology, molecular biology, plant genetic resources & breeding/crop improvement, business proposals and project plans with readiness to lead the Institute’s state of the Art Biotechnology Laboratory.  He/she must be industrious and have good knowledge and exposure in the use of Biotechnology and Physiological Approaches which includes DNA fingerprinting for verification of varietal genetic purity, patenting of research materials, patenting of release technologies, molecular techniques such as marker assisted selection technique and development of transgenic crop varieties etc, capacity building in biotechnology approaches to create a critical mass of scientists/staff in NARI, good record of international publications, evidence of writing business proposals and project plans including establishment of MOU/MOA and experience in handling quarantine requirements.

The incumbent should hold a PhD degree in relevant science discipline with a minimum of fifteen (15) years work experience. Demonstrated skills in writing research reports and project proposals and high proficiency in IT.

  1. Research & Development Coordinator - Grade 14-15– Based at Southern Regional Centre, Laloki.  Open to Citizens only.

The appointee will be required to provide coordination and overall leadership in developing and implementing priority research projects, mentoring of the scientists, finance and general administration, station management including assets, resource conservation, revenue generation and community harmonizationthat areconsistent with NARI’s strategic plans at the Regional Centre. It is expected that the incumbent also interact with the sisterinstitutions, development partners, governments and non-government agencies and other stakeholders in the Region to develop and maintain cordial relationships and facilitate networking and outreach activities of the institute.

Applicant should have a post-graduate qualification, preferably at Masters level, in Agricultural Science or relevant discipline with a minimum of ten (10) years of research experience.
