PNG signs treaty to access genetic resources

PNG has just signed a letter of accession to become a member of FAO’s International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Rimbink Pato signed the instrument on 21 January 2015, giving PNG the benefit to freely obtain seeds and genetic materials for a range of crops from international gene banks for research and breeding, says Dr Toshiro Shigaki, NARI Principle Scientist in Biotechnology.

NARI Council appoints new DDG

The NARI Council has appointed Dr Ramakrishna Akkinapally as Deputy Director General (DDG) of the Institute for a period of three years effective 15 December 2014. The new recruitment was made consequent to the resignation of Dr Workneh Ayalew in September.

Farmers urged to prepare for climate change

Farmers in high altitudes should have improved crop varieties in their gardens at all times to avoid food shortage as staples like sweet potato or kaukau are vulnerable to climatic stresses such as frost, says Dr Sergie Bang, NARI Director General.

Farmers from Ungai/Bena in Eastern Highlands have acquired new techniques on soil fertility and moisture management during a training program at Korefegu, conducted by NARI’s Aiyura-based Highlands Regional Centre during December 15-17, 2014.
