Minister renames NARI Chemistry Lab

The Late Professor John Kola was not only a profound scientist and leader but also a nation builder who had made enormous contributions to the agriculture sector in various capacities during his life, says Francis Marus, Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology.

Speaking during a small but important occasion at the NARI Chemistry Laboratory at Kilakila in Port Moresby on August 26 2016, Marus said: "Nation builders are inspirational people and the Late Professor John Kola is a classic example."

He said the late Professor was one of PNG’s great minds in science.

The Minister recognised Late Professor Kola's contributions to the establishment and operation of NARI between 1995 and 1997 in his capacity as the then Secretary for Department of Agriculture and Livestock; and also his contributions towards the recognition of the NARI Chemistry laboratory as an accredited laboratory in PNG and the Pacific among others.

"Thus, in his honour and as a token of appreciation for his work, the NARI Chemistry Laboratory is now renamed as NARI Professor John Kola Laboratory," he declared.

The event was attended by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology; NARI Council, NARI management, and other stakeholders.

Prior to the renaming of the NARI Chem Lab, Professor Chalapan Kaluwin was appointed as the new Chairman of NARI Council. Professor Kaluwin is the representative from the University of PNG on the NARI Council.

Minister Marus said since independence (1975), PNG has produced many professionals in various fields (education, business, medicine, management, engineering, law, etc) of which some have been serving overseas in various capacities (academics, pilots, doctors and diplomats) while others have driven forces behind the country's socioeconomic development.

However he said some of their efforts and contributions go unnoticed.

"This occasion calls us to reflect on the contributions of our countrymen and women in both the public and private spheres in building this great nation, Papua New Guinea.

"Some of these great Papua New Guineans have gone to rest while others are still giving their best to the country.

"We thank you all for your dedication and undivided commitment to driving Papua New Guinea’s development agenda and realising the aspirations of the government over the last 40 years," said Marus, who is also the MP for Talasea in West New Britain.
