Director General's Christmas Message

As we head into the festive season, I wish to extend my very best wishes to all our staff, partners and stakeholders.  I am pleased that NARI continues to make good progress in accomplishing its strategic objective and impacting positively on the lives of our people in this challenging time.

The Executive Management has taken a firm reign to weather the financial challenges we faced this year.  It is not just NARI but the whole public service as the National Government tightens up on the public service machinery to be effective and economical. This means NARI will not be able to pay Christmas Bonus to Staff this year.

The main focus of the Institute has been to investigate how best to assist our farming communities to adapt to the global threat of climate change and the increasing unpredictability of weather and seasons that threatens the established way of life in the communities.

The 2015 El Nino induced drought currently being experienced greatly needs strategies that have been trialled and tested through adaptive research.  Hence, NARI successfully sought funding from DFAT on a project for rehabilitation of agricultural communities affected by frost and drought especially in the 30 vulnerable districts assessed as Category 4 and 5.  The project will mainly produce and disseminate foundation planting materials of key crops for post-drought rehabilitation to one resource centre in each district for further bulking and distribution to affected communities.

Despite financial shortfalls, the Institute has made progress in its core business.  Some key achievements this year have been;

  • Successful staging of the 8th Agricultural Innovations Show (AIS);
  • Signing and inception of the EU RED2 Project;
  • Successful Development of 4 Projects with ACIAR under the TADEP Program;
  • Successful back-up internet link with Telikom;
  • Agreement and implementation of Joint Project by Taiwan Technical Mission and NARI on Farmer Training in Agricultural commercialization; and.
  • Successful installation of boundary markers on NARI land in the 5 Regional centres.

The climax of this year was the staging of the 8th AIS in Bubia to mark NARI’s 18th anniversary.  For the first time, we sourced sponsorship from business houses to stage the show and received a total of K88, 350.00.The main sponsors were Trukai, the Morobe Governor, Zenag Chicken, Farmset, Miles Lodge, the Fresh Produce Development Agency, National Development Bank and IFC Besta.

The Institute continues to achieve some excellent outcomes such as quality publications, working with women farmers and rural communities on technology transfer related activities, increased participation in post-graduate training, and wider information dissemination through the print and electronic media, field days, public shows, farmer training sessions and demonstrations.

These achievements could not have been possible without the support and commitment of the Government of PNG, AUSAID/DFAT (ACIAR) and the EU, Private sector partners, stakeholders, donors and staff from all programmes and at all levels.  We highly appreciate and treasure your commitments and contributions.

We look forward to a good year in 2016 with your continued support and pro-active contributions.

On behalf of the Institute Council and Executive Management, I convey my season’s greetings and best wishes to all staff, partners, readers, their families, and friends, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2016.
